Wirecard scandal: Exclusive Wirecard video shows pictures from the madhouse

In a video leaked to the Spiegel, ex-managers Jan Marsalek and Markus Braun can be seen reassuring Wirecard employees when the end was already near.

These are unreal-looking images that can now be seen in a video that shows the Spiegel leaked and was published exclusively by the news magazine for the weekend. Unreal because they seem so natural, so normal.

You can see, it is the beginning of May 2020, Jan Marsalek, who is now in hiding, the ex-Wirecard boss Markus Braun, who is now in custody, and two other board members of the ex-Dax company. At a so-called “town hall meeting”, a digital information event, they explain to their worried staff that there are few reasons to be worried. This is astonishing in that only a few days before the notorious and ultimately very worrying special report by the auditing company KPMG became known. What followed is well known: For Germany’s former model company, things went steeply downhill.

Jan Marsalek and Markus Braun there is no sign of the approaching Wirecard disaster

In the video, however, Braun and especially Marsalek hardly notice how close the abyss was. Braun’s former right-hand man stands nonchalantly in the much-described slim-fit suit over the pure white shirt and moderates any concerns. He speaks of trust that you don’t expect any major obstacles or problems and says: “We remain confident.”

Cola and water bottles are set up on the standing desk, along with paper and pens. An objective working atmosphere is conveyed. Only the “W” that is emblazoned above Braun’s head like an oversized crown on the wall is out of the ordinary. Even if Braun was aware of the extent of the looming catastrophe, he has nothing to say.

The Munich I public prosecutor’s office is still investigating the gigantic “Wirecard case”. In addition, a U committee in the Bundestag is trying to bring more clarity to the XXL scandal. And the volatile Jan Marsalek is one of the most wanted people on the planet. (AZ, kuepp)
