The Winter Universiade 2021 begins in a year in central Switzerland. Lucerne is the host city. The mascot, a legendary creature inspired by the yeti, was presented on Tuesday.

The event is intended for students. Every two years, it brings together around 1600 athletes aged 17 to 28 from around fifty countries. The competitions are organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

The Swiss delegation will line up with around 120 athletes, the organizers said on Tuesday. The official opening of the 30th Winter Universiade will take place on January 21, 2021 on the Europaplatz in Lucerne.

“Day of joy”

The mascot of the event arrived around 11:00 a.m. by boat. “The Winter Universiade has arrived in the region today, it’s a day of joy,” said Marcel Perren, director of the Lucerne Tourist Office. The mascot does not yet have a name. The public can make proposals.

Hosting the Winter Universiade “is particularly close to my heart,” said Lucerne state councilor Guido Graf, president of the organizing committee. It is a unique opportunity to show the close collaboration between the six cantons of central Switzerland.

The 2021 Summer Universiade will take place in Chengdu, China. In 2019, Naples (I) hosted the Summer Universiade and Krasnoyarsk (Russia) the winter one. The Winter Universiade has already taken place once in Switzerland, in 1962 in Villars (VD).
