Central North Carolina residents should prepare for a weekend of potential winter weather, with two storm systems expected to move through the region Saturday and sunday. While the heaviest precipitation is forecast for southern areas and the coast, portions of central and northern counties could see snow and sleet.
The National Weather Service reports a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for northern central North Carolina until noon on Friday. Snow accumulation estimates have been reduced since Thursday, but up to a half inch of snow and sleet is still possible, especially near the Virginia border in counties including Orange, Durham, Person, Vance, and Granville. Following the passage of these storms, arctic air is expected to arrive early next week.
Meteorologist Jonathan Blaes of the National Weather service in Raleigh explained that the area could experience two separate weather events. While southern regions will likely see rain, the potential for wintry precipitation exists further north, especially late Sunday into Monday.
State transportation officials are urging motorists to exercise caution due to potentially hazardous road conditions.Crews have been actively working to clear North carolina roads since Thursday in anticipation of the approaching weather.
