Winter precipitation and arctic cold are coming to our region; Snow for Friday – NBC New York (47)

As temperatures gradually rise during the first few days of February, forecasters are monitoring a system that could bring rain, snow and ice to our area on Friday.

High temperatures will reach the mid to upper 40s on Friday before Arctic air enters the region, the National Weather Service said.

Precipitation will begin Thursday night as rain before potentially turning to snow or ice on Friday afternoon.

“The farther north you go, the greater the chance of a longer period of frozen precipitation near the end of the system,” the National Weather Service said. “The setup looks pretty favorable for a quick freeze on Friday night, so we’ll be keeping an eye on this.”

But the bad weather will not last, as meteorologists predict a dry weekend with maximum temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees on Saturday and a little warmer on Sunday.

However, the weekend is still a long way off. Tuesday was sunny and dry with temperatures around 30 degrees although the day got off to a frigid start with some regions below freezing by 7am

Temperatures will drop into the 20s overnight before a mostly cloudy Wednesday with temperatures reaching into the 40s.

Rain is likely Thursday, mostly after 1 p.m., according to the forecast, with a high near 48 degrees expected. Rain will still be likely Thursday night when temperatures drop to around 33 degrees.

Precipitation will persist on Friday, when there is a chance of rain and snow. While there is a high near 43 degrees during the day, there is a 30% chance of snow when temperatures drop to around 16 degrees at night, the National Weather Service forecast.

A 90 percent chance of rain is in the forecast for New York City Thursday night and into Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

“Possible new precipitation amounts between a quarter and a half inch,” reads the forecast for Thursday night.
