The young man detained yesterday, who entered the grounds of Windsor Palace, where Queen Elizabeth II was celebrating Christmas, has been handed over to specialized medical staff, according to a statement from the London police.
The man was detained and his mental health was assessed – he has since been isolated under the Mental Health Act and remains in the care of medical professionals, “the police said in a statement.
It was announced yesterday that the 19-year-old offender from Southampton did not enter any of the buildings in the palace complex. His intrusion into the guarded site at 8.30 am was registered almost immediately by the security systems.
Police said today that the offender was left in the care of “medical professionals”.
Breaks in the security of royal residences are rare. The most serious during the reign of Elizabeth II was in 1982, when an offender climbed the wall of Buckingham Palace in London and walked around the room where she lay in bed. In 2016, a man with a previous conviction for murder sneaks into the Perimeter of Buckingham Palace and asks if the queen is home, Reuters recalled.
