Windows 10: you are not alone, the search engine is down

A Bing crash prevents the Windows 10 search engine from working. Here’s how to fix it.

For several hours now, many Windows 10 users have been complaining that they cannot search using the system’s built-in search engine. We saw this failure for ourselves on one of our machines. The crash appears to be caused by the Bing service, Microsoft’s search engine used by Windows 10.

Correct the problem

A trick shared by Windows Central corrects this problem by removing Bing from the Windows 10 search engine. This solution involves editing the Windows 10 registry. A fairly complex operation which should only be carried out by experienced users. It is all too likely that this fault will be quickly corrected, so we advise you to use this solution only in an emergency.

  • Go to the registry editor (Windows key + R: regedit)
  • Go to the path “Computer HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Search”
  • Create a new 32-bit DWord key
  • Name it ” BingSearchEnabled
  • Set its value to 0
  • Restart the machine

This solution will completely deactivate Bing. To reactivate the engine, simply repeat the operation, indicating the value “1”.
