Windows 10, the search for new online drivers disappears (device manager)

Quietly Microsoft has implemented a major change in Windows 10. The “Automatically check for updated driver software” feature on the Internet is gone.

Since the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft is making changes and optimizations to provide a more modern approach. Part of this mission is to migrate the content from the Control Panel to the Settings app. Recently another important change has been discovered.

The most recent version of Windows 10 does not have more an option to search for drivers online. It is normally available in Device Manager. So this maintenance is only possible through the Windows Update service.

Specifically, when you want to search for new drivers in Device Manager, there are two solutions available.

We have ” Browse my computer for driver software “And” Automatically check for updated driver software ».

This second solution was previously able to search for a driver update on the PC but also on the Internet. With this change, online research is gone. The “Automatically search for updated driver software” option becomes a simple local search.

An online search is still possible but for everything that is installed in the PC. The new option is available in Windows Update at this address

Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > View Optional Updates > Driver updates

This change is part of new features offered by Windows 10 v2004.
