The Drenthe village of Winde was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 1.6 on Tuesday evening. It is not known whether the quake caused any damage.
The quake occurred about 20 kilometers south of the city of Groningen at a depth of 3 kilometers, the KNMI reports. According to the meteorological institute, the earthquake occurred just after 8:30 p.m.
According to the KNMI, earthquakes do not occur often in Winde. The last one was in September 2020. That quake had a magnitude of 1.8.
The earthquakes in Groningen and the surrounding area are caused by gas extraction there. The strongest earthquake to date in the area was on August 16, 2012 near Huizinge in northern Groningen. That quake had a magnitude of 3.6.
In June it was announced that the Groningen gas tap will close on 1 October. That is sixty years after gas extraction began.
