Wimbledon will no longer be insured against pandemic next year

The Wimbledon tennis tournament, which should have started today without a corona crisis, will no longer be able to count on insurance next year, which will cover the financial implications of this year’s postponement. Tournament organizer Richard Lewis confirmed that to The Telegraph.

The grand slam tournament in London will not be financially hindered this year by the postponement due to the corona pandemic. The organization has already paid an annual premium for seventeen years for an insurance that would cover the financial consequences of a pandemic.

However, the same procedure will no longer be possible next year. “In the current situation, it is impossible to take out such insurance for an additional year,” explained Lewis.

The international tennis circuit will be shut down until the end of July due to the corona crisis. The US Open will be the first grand slam tournament for players between August 31 and September 13, although behind closed doors. Roland Garros starts two weeks later.
