TIME.CO, Jakarta – SAMSUNG seems ready, for the umpteenth time, to ‘take inspiration’ from Apple. This time, when its US competitor introduces satellite communication capabilities to its latest mobile phone, iPhone 14.
Apple has an Emergency SOS feature that works via satellite on the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro series in partnership with Globalstar. Later, Samsung said it was working with Iridium to bring the same satellite communications to the Galaxy S23 family. Iridium is a constellation of 66 low-Earth orbit satellites that provide voice and data services.
Samsung has been working on overcoming the technical challenges of satellite connectivity capabilities in smartphones for the past couple of years. This time it seems the effort has been successful as the launch of the Galaxy S23 family has been accompanied by rumors that users will be able to send text messages and small pictures (hundreds of kilobytes) via satellite.
Iridium satellite
As is commonly known, a satellite cell phone has its main challenge in the ability to miniaturize the antenna so that it can make the cell phone look like normal, not double its size.
Samsung thought late about this satellite communication feature because the Korean mainland is not large and can be covered quite well by 5G services. The situation is indeed different in North or South America, Europe, Russia and China. Or, in other parts of the world where the infrastructure is not sufficiently developed.
According to previous rumors and leaks, the Samsung Galaxy S23 family will exclusively use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and will launch in the first week of February.
