Will New York be replaced on the calendar?

(Motorsport-Total.com) – Due to construction work at the port in New York, Formula E could be forced to find a new home for the US race. The development of the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, i.e. the landing point for cruise ships, may already stand in the way of the electric formula championship race in the 2022/23 season.

Formula E announced a first draft of the calendar for the debut season of Gen3 cars on June 29th. The new races in Sao Paulo and Hyderabad were also there. Three events were still given without location and route. Not included: New York! The route in the Red Hook district has been there for many years – despite the cancellation in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition to Mexico, the series is keen to continue serving the North American market, especially since the race in Vancouver, Canada, has been cancelled. However, it is unclear where the journey for Formula E will go. Formula E Managing Director Jamie Reigle explains to ‘Motorsport-Total.com’ that the race is not the top priority for the port and that the development work would therefore take precedence.

“As a result, our footprint is getting smaller and smaller, which means Formula E has very little chance of growing there over the next five years,” he adds. “I’d love to find a solution in Brooklyn, but if that doesn’t work, there are other locations in New York.”

According to Reigle, a return of Formula E to New York is not set in stone. Other cities like Los Angeles are also serious alternatives for the World Cup. “I’d like to be able to make a smooth transition, but we’re not there yet. That’s why there are still empty races on the calendar.” He also confirms that Formula E is in talks with several US cities. It is not yet clear who will be awarded the contract.
