Wildfires everywhere in’Dry Winter’… Estimated 30% evolution rate in Andong, Gyeongbuk

– In the middle of the so-called’dry winter’, with less snow and rain, mainly in Yeongdong, Gangwon-do and the mountain areas, forest fires occurred one after another, causing emergency fires and forestry authorities.

According to the forestry authorities on the 22nd, a forest fire occurred in various parts of the country, such as Andong, Gyeongbuk and Yeongdong, Chungbuk, the day before in dry weather, and it has not been extinguished.

The Forest Service issued a’severe’ stage of national crisis alerts for forest fires to four cities and counties where forest fires are spreading.

Around 3:20 pm on the 21st, a fire of unknown cause broke out in a hill in Mangcheon-ri, Imdong-myeon, Andong-si, Gyeongbuk. Forest authorities and the city of Andong are engaged in an all-out war on fire fighting with 14 fire helicopters, 20 fire trucks, 19 special extinguishers, public officials, and 800 firefighters.

Forest fires once descended close to 100m in front of private houses where residents live, so Andong City and the fire department built fire lines to prevent fires from spreading to private houses. As the fire spread toward the private house, Andong City evacuated about 100 residents through disaster text messages.

The fire department currently estimates an extinguishing rate of about 30%.

– On the 21st at 5:45 pm, the Forest Service issued a’severe’ stage of national crisis warning for forest fires to four cities and counties, including Andong and Yecheon, Gyeongbuk, Hadong, Gyeongnam, and Yeongdong, Chungbuk.

In addition, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security announced that it would operate the Countermeasure Support Headquarters and dispatch a situation management team to the site to fully support the evolutionary manpower and resources.

The forest authorities plan to respond to the minimization of damage by monitoring the progress of the forest fire overnight, and to catch the big fire by sending 25 helicopters as soon as the day is bright.
