Why the opposition is blocking the coalition in the House

The opposition – above all the SPÖ – is angry. Blocking where possible was therefore the motto at yesterday’s parliamentary session. For example, the laws passed in the National Council on Tuesday will not be able to enter into force at the beginning of May, as the coalition has requested.

The reason is that the opposition parties have one Special session of Federal Councilby ÖVP and Greens would have been scheduled for Thursday. “We don’t want any quick procedures anymore, now everything has to go its usual way again,” SPÖ club vice president said Jörg Leichtfried firmly.

The resistance of the coalition is incomprehensible SPÖ against the epidemic law. The green club boss Sigrid Maurer stressed that all of the opposition’s wishes in this regard had been fulfilled. Leichtfried for its part, it remained that there were massive interventions in the rights of liberty and that they could not be carried out in a hush-botch procedure.

There is a good reason behind this maneuver: for them SPÖ once again, the turquoises failed to keep a negotiated deal.
