Why it took so long for his environment to realize Baudet

Last update 20:01

The alarm system has gone bad. It stopped responding to obvious signals.

Last week, Thierry Baudet from his immediate environment was given blow after blow. This weekend Bart Nijman, GeenStijl’s second man and former companion in the Ukraine referendum, will finish the job. In a very detailed article he deals the final blow to the disfigured admiral of the Renaissance Fleet. With dessert a column in the Nieuwe Revu.

It is remarkable that many spokespersons still remain anonymous. That says a lot about the atmosphere that Thierry Baudet has managed to create around him. In a statement early last week, he dismissed his opponents as evil spirits who had always wanted to undermine the party. Henk Otten underwent the same treatment. Anyone who questions the course has never been right, was wrong and treacherous from the start. In that respect, Thierry Baudet is very similar to another leader from the past, Joseph Stalin. He too finds it morally reprehensible to disagree with him.

Then as a critic you prefer to stay in the shade. Even now that the Götterdammerung is in full swing. Or you secretly change the lock of the party office so that the leader is in front of a closed door.

Despite the anonymity of a few sources, Nijman nevertheless convincingly demonstrates that Baudet’s anti-Semitism is not an isolated remark uttered during an overly watered-down dinner, but a regular song in his repertoire. He mainly quotes people from Baudet’s academic environment such as the Arabist Machteld Zee. They make it clear that he had shown hatred of Jews as far back as his years at university. Lately it got so bad that witnesses asked Baudet’s ally and promoter Prof. Paul Cliteur a few times. Maybe he could make it stop. Cliteur waved everything away. So touches this professor is also damaged due to the collapse of his most famous pupil. He released a security statement stating that his worldview had no place for “Nazism, fascism, xenophobic anti-Semitism, discrimination or otherwise objectionable views.”

You don’t even need to know that much about the history of political ideas to determine from which sources Baudet has been drinking all his adult life. That really is not My fight. These are the extreme right-wing philosophers and authors from pre-WWII France, who wanted an authoritarian – often king-led – state free of foreign taints. Among those strangers in their eyes were the Jews. They were counted among the metics who were outside the French people. That word is derived from the Greek metoikos with which the Athenians designated free aliens who lived with them but had no political rights. George Moustaki still has the status of métèque a beautiful chanson written that – whether or not transformed into rap – could still render great services to the friends of the open society.

In his piece, Nijman points out that Baudet was quite a fan of Charles Maurras, a journalist and writer who was very convinced of the great Jewish conspiracy. I had that idea before. Moreover: why do you need it someone like Robert Lemm to come and teach at your summer schools for the Baudetjeugd?

It took years for the royal household to find out what kind of meat they had in the tub with their leader and teacher. It also remained for a long time with mutual whispers. How is that possible? They are generally well-read people. The answer is simple: their alarm system has gone bad. It stopped responding to obvious signals. Since the emergence of Fortuyn, it has become a pleasure in the Netherlands to report on outsiders, on métèques. They are tolerated if they fully adapt to the lifestyle of the white Netherlands and then they are still considered strangers. Thinking that Muslims are undermining the Netherlands in the context of a grand plan to force the whole world to worship Allah is generally accepted. Then you are part of the acceptable discourse. Then you are invited to the talk shows to explain a few things, which you haughtily reject because you do not let the lying mainstream media lure you into a trap. After all, they are instruments in the hands of a small elite that has a finger in the pie everywhere and wants to destroy the culture of the people because it threatens their power. Nowadays you can say things like that in the Netherlands and nobody asks what you have injected or swallowed. It has become normal.

If you yourself think in that direction, then it is quite conceivable if anti-Semitism or scornful remarks against gays and transgender people pass you by. After all, they fit into your own way of reasoning. You may think, “Hey, what is he saying?” but you let it pass you by because you make these kinds of jokes yourself about Muslims and black people and of course you use words, which are now taboo in civilized circles. You do that veiled and softly. You remain on your guard and only when the drink, pill or powder is in the man does it all come out unadulterated. And if it suddenly over to the table Jews you let it run. At least for the first time. Later that alarm bell – so often hit by the same signal – starts to buzz anyway.

That is now happening in the Baudet area.
