After the arrest of Salvador Cienfuegos, former Secretary of National Defense, Andrés Manuel López Obrador He questioned the alleged interference that North American agencies have had in Mexico and called for clarification of the DEA’s relationship with the retired general.
The head of the Mexican federal executive urged the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to clarify its relationship with the former public official in charge of the work of the national army, arrested in California on drug trafficking charges.
“The DEA should report on their involvement. Undoubtedly they coexisted (…) with the general secretary of the past six-year term, ”López Obrador told reporters during a tour of the state of Oaxaca.
López Obrador raised this request after reminding the press of the case of what he considered to be a failed controlled delivery of weapons, which ended up in the hands of criminal groups. According to the president, it was orchestrated by the ATF, the US agency responsible for the control of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives.
The president maintained that said agency did not face his responsibility in the operation, executed between 2006 and 2011, in coordination with the government of the then Mexican president Felipe Calderon. In addition, he questioned that suspects are only being pursued on the side of Mexico, but not from the United States.
“Why is it only accused, involved, those who have participated in these events in Mexico and they do not make a self-criticism, a reflection of all the interference of those agencies in Mexico?”, Questioned López Obrador.
Later, he criticized past governments, who were supposed to be the guilty of allowing said agencies to enter with “absolute freedom” into Mexican territory, and pointed out that they allegedly did not take care of the sovereignty of the country.
“Foreigners should not be allowed to intervene in matters that only correspond to Mexicans, the sovereignty of our country was not taken care of. Now it’s different, ”said López Obrador, who heads the cabinet of the Fourth Transformation.
About, López Obrador thanked US President Donald Trump for having offered him help when “security problems” have arisen, and he considered that his offers were made with the intention of cooperating and not “wanting to get into Mexico.”
“Until now, since I have the responsibility of the presidency there has been no interference and we have not allowed it,” he said.
