Why does Texas allow the carrying of weapons in public and without a license?

On June 16, a law was enacted in Texas authorizing the carrying of a firearm in public without a license. Wanted by the republican governor Greg Abbott, this law was adopted by the Senate and the House of Representatives of Texas, majority Republicans. So for anyone from over 21 – not covered by a ban on possession of a weapon – from September 1st, it will therefore be possible to go out in public places with a weapon, and that without a permit.

It is on the basis of the observation that both the Constitution of the United States and that of Texas allow the carrying of a weapon that the text was adopted. Everything must be done to avoid obstacles and make the carrying of a weapon more accessible to all.

According to Texas Tribune, the governor should also preside over a promulgation ceremony of the text on June 17. “It’s something that about 20 other states have adopted, and it’s time for texas to adopt it too“, he declared in April on a local radio, specifying that the promulgation would take place only if the two chambers vote in its favor.

An increase in violence?

However, the Democratic opposition argues that the adoption of such a measure to relax the rules should inevitably lead to an increase in violence. Mentioning in particular the shooting in Austin from June 11 to 12 which left 14 injured, but also that in 2019 at the El Paso supermarket which had 22 dead and 23 injured.

In issuing this decree, Greg Abbott has “chosen to betray the victims of gun violence fire, “says Veronica Escobar, Texas elected to the House of Representatives. She writes on Twitter:” Despite strong support for legislation to prevent gun violence, the Republicans, led by a cowardly governor , are more interested in attracting the attention of the gun lobby than they are to prevent gun violence and to honor the victims and survivors of El Paso and across Texas. ”
