Why does NYC need more women in local politics?

As of today, only 13 of the 51 members of the City Council are women.

To improve those numbers, the organization 21 on 21 is backing the candidacies of countless candidates in this election year.

For example, in the 14th district of the Bronx, they are helping the Afro-Dominican Pierina sanchez, who in the past worked in the White House during the presidency of Barack Obama.

In District 34, which encompasses neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, the organization is supporting Jennifer Gutierrez. Of Colombian parents, Gutiérrez currently works as chief of staff for councilor Antonio Reynoso, whom he wants to succeed in the position.

And in the 13th district of the Bronx, 21 in 21 is supporting Marjorie Velazquez. Born to Puerto Rican parents, Velazquez is running for this seat for the second time. This time she is emerging as the favorite to win the Democratic primary.

We spoke with the three candidates and with the former president of the Municipal Council, Melissa Mark-Viverito, on their agendas, political philosophy, and Governor Andrew Cuomo’s sexual harassment scandal.
