In 1973, Roger Moore took over from Sean Connery as 007, James Bond, and just a few years later, Mad Max first star Mel Gibson was approached by MGM to take over. Something he didn’t want and he turned it down. The idea of a young Mel in a tuxedo playing the role of the greatest spy in the world is certainly tempting, as we at Gamereactor think he could have played the role quite well. This was what commented the actor about it:
“I was offered to do James Bond movies when I was twenty-six, I mean, forty years ago. And they said, ‘Hey, we want you to be the next James Bond.’ And I thought about it; I was in. Australia, I was working with Peter Weir. And I thought about it, and kind of refused, for that reason. Because I thought, look what happened to poor Sean, he’s been stuck there for three decades. “
