Why an old disease like monkey pox now hits us so hard

You cannot call monkey pox a new disease. Vaccines against it have been around for a long time. And yet we don’t seem to have the situation under control. The World Health Organization even calls it a public health emergency of international concern. How did it get so out of hand and do we get the genie back in the bottle?
