Why a MacBook may say it’s not charging

If you happen to plug your Mac into the mains and are surprised to find that it is not charging, Apple posted a note to reassure you: this may be perfectly normal. Since the macOS Catalina version 10.15.5, released at the end of May, Apple introduced a new feature to better optimize the battery of its recent laptops, those equipped with Thunderbolt3 ports.

The system analyzes your Mac usage and attempts to adapt to best meet your needs while extending battery life. This means not constantly recharging the battery to 100%, which can damage it, and it also sometimes means lowering the charge level temporarily before returning to a full charge. In short, this feature implies trusting the Mac, which therefore makes its sauce and can be a little confusing at first.

This new option is enabled by default, which can be confusing. To deactivate it, you must go to the System Preferences, energy saving panel, then click on the Battery health button. Apple specifies that there may be other reasons for not charging, in particular when the charger provides insufficient power; you can find the procedure to identify the problem on this page.
