WHO special envoy assessed Sweden’s strategy to fight coronavirus

The strategy of the Swedish authorities, which did not impose strict restrictions in the fight against the spread of the new coronavirus, may become a model of behavior in the future in a pandemic for other states, said WHO Special Envoy Dr. David Nabarro. writes RIA Novosti.

According to Nabarro, the Swedish authorities decided to rely on the awareness of the population that residents will follow the recommended precautions, and did not impose severe restrictive measures.

At the same time, Sweden ranks 39th in the world in the number of detected cases of coronavirus infection, according to data from the Johns Hopkins Institute. In the country, more than 84 thousand infected were identified, and the number of deaths approached 6 thousand. Following Sweden, Guatemala ranks 40th in the number of detected cases of infection (74 thousand).

During the active phase of the pandemic, Sweden did not close educational institutions and catering, however, the authorities canceled all public events, introduced recommendations for observing social distance, and also recommended that residents work remotely if possible. At the same time, as the agency notes, this did not help the country to avoid the negative economic consequences caused by the pandemic. Thus, in the summer, the unemployment rate in Sweden reached almost 9%, while the decline in GDP is expected at 7%.
