WHO sounds alarm: Monkeypox outbreak is international medical emergency

Monkeypox in humans was, until recently, almost exclusively found in West and Central Africa. But since May this year, the virus has also appeared in many other countries. At the moment, outbreaks are mainly in Europe and the United States.

The virus is transmissible through skin-to-skin contact and still spreads mainly among men who have sex with men. Although it is not a sexually transmitted disease and anyone can contract an infection.

The first two cases of monkeypox in children were diagnosed yesterday in the US. The children are not said to be very ill and are currently being treated. How they contracted the infection is still being investigated. An infection had already surfaced in a child in the Netherlands.
