WHO Pledges to Help Africa Handle Ebola and Covid-19

Ebola is again an epidemic in Africa.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NAIROBI – The World Health Organization (WHO) has mobilized financial resources and technical expertise to step up the fight against Ebola and Covid-19 in Africa. Both diseases are a threat to public health there.

Regional Director WHO for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti assessed the importance of increasing capacity Africa to respond to the two infectious diseases. He is optimistic that these efforts are the key to preventing a prolonged public health crisis that can lead to mass death.

“Our collective swift action is essential to prevent the uncontrolled spread of Ebola in the middle pandemic Covid-19 which has overwhelmed health workers and health facilities, “Moeti said in a statement quoted by the news agency Named on Friday (19/2).

WHO announced the Ebola outbreak in Guinea and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). At the same time, WHO and partners are stepping up mitigation measures to curb the rapid spread of the highly contagious dengue fever.

Moeti said three cases of Ebola had been detected in a remote village in Guinea. Meanwhile in DRC, there have been four confirmed cases, including two deaths related to the disease.

Moeti said that WHO would immediately deploy a team of experts to support national authorities in fighting Ebola and prevent the spread of infections that could derail efforts to fight Covid-19.

“With the experts and emergency supplies in place, the response to disease starts off strong,” said Moeti.

Moeti added that the health systems built during the Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014 had strengthened the response to the current outbreak.
