Germany is on the verge of historic elections – Chancellor Angela Merkel ruled the country for 16 years, and many do not represent Germany with another chancellor.

On the eve of the elections in the capital of the country, Berlin is calm, in the center today they were much more engaged in the first marathon after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic than in the elections.

According to recent polls, 40% of Germans, that is, almost half of the country, do not know whom to vote for. The last almost 16 years, the unchanging Angela Merkel has been in power. In the conditions of democratic and transparent elections, here they constantly gave the helm of power to her. And so far, Merkel as a politician in the country has the highest ratings.

“For Germany to remain stable, Armin Laschet must become chancellor,” said German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

But Armin Laschet, even though he runs North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s largest region with over 17 million citizens, lacks charisma. They do not believe him because “mommy,” as they call Merkel, is asking for him.

Merkel’s main rival has much better chances – they are also coalition partners, the Social Democrats. Olaf Scholz, their head, is the Minister of Finance, this is an important and noticeable position in politics, he is better known. What should be remembered when talking about this party to Ukrainians – the Social Democrats are skeptical about anti-Russian sanctions and support Nord Stream 2, it says in the plot of TSN.

“I think now people are looking for someone they can trust just like Merkel. Let’s take care of something else. “That’s what they want. And such people are likely to vote for Olaf Scholz,” Ralph Bolman, a historian and author of the biography of Angela Merkel, is convinced.

Annalena Berbock, the candidate from the Greens, looked like a serious competitor a year ago, but since then she has lost confidence due to a number of scandals related to plagiarism. The young Swedish eco-activist Greta Thunberg tried to raise the chances of the “greens”, who appeared here at a crowded rally the day before and called on young people to go to the polling stations.

For Ukraine, this is a somewhat alarming period, because whoever comes instead of Merkel, he will know the Ukrainian issue worse and, most importantly, he will not have foreign policy experience. Most likely, if the votes are evenly distributed among the main candidates, Germany will face tense negotiations on a new coalition from next week.

As UNIAN reported earlier, September 8 Merkel spoke for the last time in parliament as chancellor, which has been the last 16 years, that is, for four consecutive terms. She was remembered not only for the fateful decisions for the country, but also for her corporate style in clothing. Merkel wears classic jackets of the same cut with three buttons and often in bright colors.

In her last speech as Chancellor, Merkel asked to support her party in the upcoming elections. The MPs accompanied Merkel with thunderous applause.

Merkel’s plans after the post of chancellor

Angela Merkel, mostly joked when answering a question about her future plans. She has repeatedly said that she just wants to rest and “finally get some sleep.”

But in a more philosophical mood, Merkel, 67, recently reflected that she had to reckon with how much more was allotted to her.

“In the current segment of my life, I want to think very carefully about what is on the surface in me. Do I want to write something, perform, go hiking, or I want to stay at home, or travel the world,” Bloomberg quotes her words from the speech on September 8.
