Emilietta Chini’s family is not to blame at all, say professors from Hasselt University who research dementia. Half of people with dementia will wander outdoors at some point. They often get bored or no longer feel at home in their own environment and then go in search of their parental home, which was also the case with 75-year-old Emiletta Chini. UHasselt is investigating in various residential care centers whether extra exercise can counteract wandering. Unfortunately, there is no panacea for dementia yet, but the researchers at Hasselt University are focusing on prevention to discover how the disease can be prevented.
