WHO fears that cancer will double | TIME ONLINE

The Number of cancers According to a forecast by the World Health Organization (WHO) almost double by 2040. This emerges from the World Cancer Report, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) publishes every five years. In 2018, 18.1 million people worldwide contracted cancer, 9.6 million people died of it. In 2040, about 29 to 37 million people are expected to be new cancer fall ill, said the WHO belonging to IARC on World Cancer Day.

The head of the German Cancer Research Center, Michael Baumann, also assumes this development. The reasons are the growing and aging world population, but also factors that affect lifestyle, said Baumann. Germany is expected to see an annual increase in new cases from 500,000 to around 600,000 in the future.

Baumann called the people to one healthier lifestyle on. “According to the current state of knowledge, if you follow everything we currently know, 40 percent of cancers could actually be prevented by primary prevention.” Baumann mentioned points about which many people are informed, but which are still not being implemented: no smoking, avoiding excess weight, physical activity, healthy eating, little or no alcohol. Prevention also includes taking all vaccinations and precautions recommended against cancer.

Almost every second German falls ill with cancer

In Germany, 65 percent of all survived people with cancer for at least five years. In international comparison, Germany is well ahead. But that also means that 35 percent of all Germans who get cancer do not survive for five years. According to the Robert Koch Institute, almost every second person in Germany falls ill with cancer: the lifetime risk is 42.6 percent for women and 47.5 percent for men.

Surviving cancer is also said a question of prosperity, the IARC announced. Affected people in poorer countries as well as poorer sections of the population in rich countries would have less chance of survival. The likelihood of dying from cancer is in high-income countries decreased by 20 percent between 2000 and 2015, only 5 percent in low-income countries.
