“Culinary New York is so diverse. And I get a cornflakes casserole here,” Tim Mälzer taunts. In the current episode, the Hamburg chef goes to America. First stop is New York: He has to cook in the street food truck in New York. Namely: Chotpoti, a well-known food in Bangladesh. His opponent this time is Edi Frauneder, an Austrian cook and restaurateur who is making his American dream come true in New York.

The surprise is in the black box

The challenge is the same every time, the concept is as simple as it is good: a dish is served in a black box that the challenged chef has to cook. He has to taste and analyze what ingredients are used, how they were prepared. In the kitchen of the original chef, the dish has to be re-cooked. A jury, whose common denominator is this favorite dish, then evaluates the result. There are also some swear words by Tim Mälzer.

In the episode when he is standing in the mini kitchen of the street food truck in New York, Mälzer talks about his dream of opening a restaurant in New York one day, but the costs have exploded.

Avant-garde cuisine in Washington and traditional in New Orleans

Mälzer knows how best to challenge his opponents: by presenting them with dishes that he would not want to cook himself. Like the task in Washington, where he sends Frauneder to Elcielo, the first Colombian starred restaurant outside of Colombia. It’s avant-garde cuisine, Frauneder has to recreate an onion and white chocolate soup and a kind of cracker.

Things are pretty original in New Orleans, where Frauneder is served a traditional Creole dish: gumbo, a kind of stew, and bread pudding with rum sauce for dessert.

At his last stop in Kansas City, Tim Mälzer not only has to grill meat, but also cook the well-known Mac’n’Cheese. The pasta dish is prepared with five cheeses.

In the end, Mälzer came in just 13.8 points ahead of Edi Frauneder with 13.7 points.
