Which streets are affected by the new traffic plan that will be tested in Chartres?

Motorists will have to change their habits. From the end of October, the City of Chartres will experiment with a new traffic plan in the northern sector of the municipality. Guillaume Bonnet, deputy mayor in charge of improving the living environment, hosted a first public meeting this Monday, September 7, at the MPT of La Cité.

What are the objectives of this experiment?

This traffic plan is the result of a study launched in 2016.

“The main idea is to bring a better quality of life to the Chartrains. We want to calm the traffic. “

Guillaume Bonnet (Deputy mayor in charge of improving the living environment)

This experiment is part of a more global project of the City, which wishes secure soft travel (pedestrians, bicycles, scooters). “Ultimately, the goal is to have a city at 30 km / hour and without traffic lights, and one-way streets whenever possible. “

The municipality intends limit as much as possible the transit flow in the city center. “When you come from Dreux and want to go to Orléans, the GPS takes you through rue du Bourgneuf, boulevard Foch and avenue d’Orléans. The objective is to force the transit flow to take the ring road, ”illustrates the elected official in charge of the file.

What are the main axes affected by the new traffic plan?

The experiment revolves around three major traffic axes entering or leaving the city:

  1. Rue du Bourgneuf (9,600 vehicles per day);
  2. Rue des Grandes-Filles-Dieu (6,000 vehicles per day)
  3. Rue de Fresnay (3,500 vehicles per day).

“Rue Edouard-Lefèvre, which now links rue du Bourgneuf to rue de Fresnay, was opened to traffic on February 28th. Without the extension of this axis, which is still relatively little frequented by motorists, this project was not possible ”, notes Guillaume Bonnet.

What are the main changes to the traffic plan?

Rue du Bourgneuf will be put in one-way exit towards Lèves, up to rue Edouard-Lefèvre. Motorists arriving from Dreux will therefore no longer be able to take rue du Bourgneuf, and will have to turn right towards rue Edouard-Lefèvre, then take rue de Fresnay to reach Chartres city center.

The buses can take the rue du Bourgneuf in both ways, only in the part located between rue Edouard-Lefèvre and avenue Beaurepère. The buses of the line 3 will take Avenue d’Aligre to reach Place Drouaise.

The rue du Petit-Orme pass a one way going up to the residential area of Lèves. The rue de l’Arbre-de-la-Liberté will stay in double meaning in his lower part, and will be put in one-way street to rue de Fresnay. The rue Parmentier and rue de Fresnay will pass in one way, entering towards Chartres.

On the other side of Place Drouaise, the rue des Grandes-Filles-Dieu will go to one way, descending towards Chartres. Buses will be able to run in both directions, pending the establishment of a new circuit. A little further on, rue Gabriel-Loire will be renovated in the course of 2021, then will be put in two directions.

What is the duration of the experiment?

The traffic plan will be tested from end of October until the first quarter of 2021. “Flow meters will be installed on all these tracks to assess changes in habit. The details of the directions of movement are not fixed. There could be modifications ”, assures Guillaume Bonnet.

By the end of the first quarter of 2021, new public meetings will be organized with residents to gather their comments. The City will then define the final traffic plan to be implemented.

Convenient. Two public meetings on this experiment are scheduled for Monday, September 14, at 8 p.m., at the MPT du Pont-Neuf and Tuesday, September 15, at 8 p.m., at the MPT of Rechèvres.
