Which European countries are imposing the curfew? – The Economic Newspaper

An increase in Covid-19 cases across Europe has led countries to take restrictive measures, opting not to resort to general confinement as in March, April and May. From the imposition of curfews to confinements located in areas that have seen a high increase in cases, which countries have already taken action to reduce infections?

Italy

In Italy, which is being severely affected again, the Campania region will apply for authorization to impose a mandatory night curfew, which is due to start next Monday. Lombardy, which during the first wave of infections of the new coronavirus was one of the most affected in Italy, also received the green light for a curfew between 11 pm and 5 am.

Italian health authorities have already warned that health systems are at risk of becoming overburdened, and that hospitalization in intensive care units is expected to increase, with beds being depleted at an accelerated rate. In order to avoid general confinement, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte is giving cities the freedom to decide their own restrictions, with many opting for a curfew, closing bars and restaurants.

Ireland

Due to a very high increase in new cases, the Ireland made the radical decision to impose a new general containment, although schools remain open. From this Wednesday, this new confinement will take effect during the next six weeks, in order to mitigate the rate of infections.

Thus, according to Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, non-essential businesses are likely to close and restaurants and bars are limited to selling food on a take-away, in addition to trips having a maximum limit of five kilometers away when it is not about work. Leo Varadkar, a former prime minister, estimated that 15,000 Irish people should lose their job with this new confinement.

Spain

The epidemiological situation in Spain is also not very favorable, compared to the rest of Europe. Pedro Sánchez’s government was among the first to declare a blockade in Madrid due to the increase in cases that they were unable to control, considering applying a curfew, reducing the contact that citizens had with each other in bars and restaurants.

The community of Navarra, in northern Spain, has also announced a two-week confinement, a stricter measure than those imposed in Madrid. In this case, citizens can only leave the region to work, study and care for their families. Stores that remain open can only open at 40% of total capacity but must close at 9 pm.

Germany

The German government has also chosen to confine the region of Bavaria during this week due to the exponential increase in cases being witnessed. The Berchtesgadener Land region in Bavaria has been among the most affected and the government has decided to place a two-week confinement to slow the rate of infection.

However, several politicians, district representatives and experts admit that other regions may also have to face localized confinement if the numbers of infected with Covid-19 continue to increase. Still, the restrictions will depend on how health officials manage to contain the incidence of the virus.

Belgium

The epidemiological situation in Belgium also does not look favorable, with the Belgian Minister of Health admitting that the country is seeing a “tsunami” of new cases reaching the country, with the government imposing a curfew between midnight and midnight. 5 hours. If hospitals are unable to control the rate of new infections, virologists assume the need to apply a new confinement, similar to what was imposed in March and April.

Since last Monday, cafes and restaurants have closed, in order to reduce contact, and prohibiting the sale of alcohol after 8 pm, but the health authorities have doubts regarding this measure, since in September most Belgians did not respect the rules of social distance imposed gathering at the home of friends and family.

France

In France, President Emmanuel Macron announced that nine regions will have a curfew, and that it will run for six weeks, so that health professionals can control the situation in hospitals and flatten the curve of new infections.

Macron considered that this curfew, like other European countries, is “relevant” while a new confinement would be “disproportionate”. The curfew runs from 9 pm to 6 am and is imposed in île de France (Paris region), Lille, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Toulouse, Lyon, Grenoble, Aix-en-Provence and Montpellier.

United Kingdom

Although the United Kingdom does not impose a mandatory curfew on its citizens, bars and restaurants must close after 10 pm, reducing the chances of citizens joining groups in excess of six, breaking an existing restriction. England currently has a three-tier system, which imposes restrictions depending on the level assigned to the region.

London has raised the alert to the second level, prohibiting families from gathering indoors, with Liverpool currently at the highest alert level.

Wales

THE Wales will impose, from Friday, a mandatory confinement of 17 days, ending on November 9, and the objective of the measure is “to provoke a sudden and rapid shock” in the fight against the pandemic, allowing the flattening of the rising curve of new infections. During the two weeks, the inhabitants have to stay in their homes and privilege teleworking, and all non-essential services will also remain closed until the government orders it.
