Where to do your shopping in a supermarket in New York?

If you are used to shopping at Monoprix, Franprix, Carrefour, Auchan or Leclerc, you will have a little hesitation when you arrive in New York. You will not find any large supermarket in Manhattan: for that, you have to go to the outskirts of New York, which is to say that this is not practical for a tourist who stays a week or 10 days in New York.
In Manhattan, on the other hand, you will find a host of “drugstores”, notably the Duane Read and CVS brands. These stores are like small bazaars, with drugstore and pharmacy, but, in terms of food, this is limited to drinks and “junk food”, crisps and other sweets.
To find fresh produce, fruits and vegetables, there are fortunately a few addresses of real supermarkets. Moreover, the offer is developing more and more in New York. Here are the addresses to note in your agenda:

Amish Market

A few steps from the One World Trade Center tower, Amish Market is a small supermarket which offers you a wide choice of fresh products, including yoghurt, as well as prepared products, including sandwiches and salads.
Address: 53 Park Place / West Broadway

Ernest Klein Supermarket

Close to Central Park, Ernest Klein Supermarket could be similar to a Monoprix or a Franprix. The shelves offer a wide choice of products, from meat to pasta through a well-stocked fruit and vegetable department.
Address: 1336 6th Avenue / 55th and 56th Street

Whole Foods Market

Whole Foods Market is a chain of supermarkets specializing in organic products. It is the American equivalent of the French channels La Vie Claire, Naturalia or Biocoop. Whole Foods Market has 4 addresses in Manhattan: 270 Greenwich Street (Tribeca), 250 7th Avenue (Chelsea), 4 Union Square South (Union Square), 95 East Houston Street (Bowery).

Gristedes

Founded in 1888 in New York, Gristedes is a chain of small supermarkets where you will find large shelves dedicated to food. Gristedes has dramatically increased its number of stores in Manhattan in recent years and you will now find several dozen of them. The one at 202 E 96th Street on the Upper East Side is one of the most convenient. You’ll also find a very convenient one in Downtown, a short walk from Wall Street at 90 Maiden Lane.

Fairway Market

Fairway Market is the direct competitor of Gristedes. Founded in New York in 1930, this chain of small supermarkets now has 5 addresses in Manhattan: 766 Avenue of the Americas (Chelsea), 550 2nd Avenue (Kips Bay), 2131 Broadway (Upper West Side), 240 East 86th Street (Upper East Side) and 2328 12th Avenue (Harlem)

Target

Finally, I would like to point out to you the arrival of a newcomer in Manhattan: the large American chain Target, equivalent of Carrefour in the United States. This Minneapolis-born group is developing under its own brand and owns the Wal-Mart and Home Depot chains. Target has just opened a small two-story supermarket in Tribeca at 255 Greenwich Street.
