It’s no secret that companies or brands don’t necessarily play with open cards when it comes to marketing. However, some strategies seem extremely absurd. A TikToker has collected the craziest marketing stories and presents them in a video series.

New Zealander Selena Wright is actually a photographer and social media manager, but also very knowledgeable about marketing. Inspired by other TikTok series that present interesting facts, she started her own with the topic that interests her most.

And others seem interested in their marketing facts too. She accumulates up to half a million clicks with each of her short clips. Here are some of the craziest stories Wright unearthed:

Why is Philadelphia actually called Philadelphia?

With the Philadelphia brand name, the association with the US city is inevitable – and that is exactly what the manufacturers originally intended. Because the cream cheese has absolutely nothing to do with the city. It was first produced in New York, but never in Philadelphia. In 1880, however, it received this brand name because Philadelphia was famous for its high-quality dairy products.

Why there are t-shirts

According to Wright, the t-shirt was invented in 1904 – in fact, the buttonless garment has been around for a long time, but at the beginning of the 20th century it made the step from pure underwear to everyday wear. In 1904 a company proclaimed it a “new bachelorette’s garment” and it was marketed as such for a long time. The reason: Men often did not know how to sew buttons, and without a woman in the household a T-shirt – at least according to the arguments of the campaigns – was simply more practical.

Subliminal advertising by scent note

Marketing mostly uses optical or acoustic aids, but Dunkin Donuts used olfactory tricks in 2012. In South Korea, public buses were equipped with devices that sprayed the scent of coffee when the Dunkin Donut advertising jingle sounded. The sales of shops near bus stops increased by 29 percent.

What does the K stand for at JK Rowling? For a marketing ploy

The real name of the “Harry Potter” author is Joanne Rowling – she has no middle name. So where does the K come from? As Wright explains, her publisher wanted her to use initials as artist names in order to appeal to all children. Boys would read books by women authors less than those by male authors. According to Rowling’s website, the K stands for Kathleen, her grandmother’s name.
