When the body speaks

The individual demands and demands generated by these times of confinement have made stress become a primary subject in the daily life of citizens.

Psychological stress is defined as a particular relationship between the individual and his environment that is evaluated by the subject himself as threatening or overflowing with his resources, and that endangers his well-being. From this perspective, stress is not considered exclusively as an external event of which the subject is a victim, but there must be both internal and external conditions and it is the relationship between them that generates its appearance and individual characteristics.

Certain events can generate more stress in some people than in others, due to the contextual variables of each individual’s field, the personal variables of the same and the consequences of stress itself, so the event can be qualified from different perspectives according to individual features of the person, so that different people respond in different ways to the same eventuality.

Research studies have shown that psychological stress causes numerous physiological diseases in that it involves all systems and subsystems of the body, thus causing effects on the physical and mental health of those who suffer from it. Stress can cause various disorders and considerably affect the life of those who suffer from it by producing alterations in psychic development and causing damage to biological processes.

When there is a physical complaint without clinical findings of an organic cause, we then speak of the individual presenting a somatization, which is nothing more than the physical expression of psychological distress.

The main feature of somatization disorder is the repeated presentation of physical symptoms that are difficult to explain from the pathophysiology, accompanied by continuous demands for complementary tests and referrals, despite repeated negative results and continuous assurances from physicians that the symptoms are not justified. organic.

Migraines, dizziness, skin rashes, nausea, stomach pain, chronic pain, asthma or difficulties sleeping are some of the physical manifestations that can arise from the acute and continuous stress of a person who has not been able to channel their psychological discomfort and have repressed it in time. When negative emotions are not expressed, they get trapped within and later take their toll on the body.

Some of the psychosomatic factors directly linked to stress are:

a) Sleep disturbance. It affects the general performance of people, influences their mood swings, which originates in the person not having a proper and healthy rest.

b) The pain is oAnother of the psychosomatic factors associated with stress. In recent decades, various researchers have identified that stress can amplify pain or, conversely, pain can be seen as a stressor; However, in both cases it usually appears in people with greater sensitivity and activation, such as a headache or back pain, for example.

c) Anxiety, This disorder appears when tasks or activities that demand greater attention are carried out, thus causing an affectation or alteration that turns it into a pathology by increasing the frequency of certain symptoms, such as general irritability, anguish, night terrors and dizziness.

d) Gastrointestinal disorders are considered one of the psychosocial factors with the greatest relevance in those people who suffer continuous stress, thereby causing persistent stomach upset and various physiological diseases, such as gastritis.

e) Although sex is considered a key element to reduce stress levels, the latter can affect sexual life when stress is prolonged, thereby causing effects on sexual appetite that ultimately generate dysfunctions of one’s sexuality.

To avoid these manifestations or imbalances in your physical area, I will describe some guidelines to follow that can help you:

  1. Recognize and identify the emotions you feel as negative. Not looking at the origin of the problem will have an impact on the fact that it will continue to recur without a solution.
  2. Look for therapeutic spaces or not to express those emotions that cause you discomfort. Talking, analyzing and interpreting emotions is the best way to release those repressed psychological tensions.
  3. Relaxation and visualization techniques can help you to dismantle and relieve the body tension that psychological discomfort generates.

Focus on your body, carry out activities that allow you to release those accumulated emotions. Dance, walk, jump, run, do any physical activity that allows you to discharge and release emotions.
