This was stated by the Director of the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC), Robert Redfield.

“We have clear scientific evidence that masks work, and are our best defense,” Robert was quoted as saying CNBC, Wednesday (16/9/2020).

Robert made the statement to the US Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies.

Vaccine limited number
He said that a potential Covid-19 vaccine, which is likely to be available in limited quantities at the end of this year, may only have 70 percent immunogenicity.
Immunogenicity is the ability of a vaccine to build an immune response against a virus.
Other prominent health experts, including the White House coronavirus adviser, Dr Anthony Fauci said it was likely to produce the Covid vaccine-19 which is very effective, with 98 percent protection or more, is very small.

Fauci, who is director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said scientists expect a vaccine that is at least 75 percent effective.
But the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it would approve coronavirus vaccine as long as it is safe and at least 50 percent effective.
A vaccine that is 50 percent effective is roughly the equivalent of the influenza vaccine but below the effectiveness of one vaccine for measles, which is about 93 percent effective.

After claims that masks might be more effective than vaccines left Robert’s mouth, US President Donald Trump immediately denied this.
According to Trump, vaccines are far more important than masks.
“Masks are not as important as vaccines. But masks might help,” Trump said Business Insider, Wednesday (16/9/2020).

Clarify
The CDC later highlighted Redfield’s remarks after being criticized by Trump, clarifying his stance on face masks.
“I 100 percent believe in the importance of a vaccine and in particular the Covid-19 vaccine,” Redfield said in an emailed statement. CNBC.
