At the moment, only a few parents are allowed to hand over their children to the emergency care of a day care center. This is allowed if you work in the area of critical infrastructure. This includes, for example, nurses or police officers. But single parents can also bring their little ones to the daycare center if they have to work. According to the Ministry of Family Affairs, a prerequisite for emergency care is that no other adult who is living with you can look after the child.
What if my child is sick?
For the time being, it is and remains prohibited to bring sick children to emergency care. This applies not only to signs of a corona infection, but to all symptoms of the disease. And if the child has had contact with a person who has been infected with the coronavirus, at least 14 days must have passed without the child having any symptoms before being allowed to go back to daycare.

According to the Social Code, this exists if an upbringing that is in the best interests of the child is not guaranteed. A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Family said that where there was a great need for support even before the corona pandemic.
And what will change in the daycare centers from May 25th?
Then preschool children can also go back to day care centers. These must be prepared for the coming school year in autumn, said Prime Minister Sder. And since they are older, they could understand hygiene measures better than “the very young children,” says Family Minister Carolina Trautner (CSU). The siblings of the children who are already attending emergency care are then allowed to go back to the day care center. In addition, forest children’s gardens are reopened.

Which special hygiene requirements do the educators have to meet?
In principle, responsibility for hygiene measures lies with the daycare providers. However, the family ministry makes some recommendations. This includes, of course, regular hand washing and the cleaning of paws. But neither children nor educators have to wear a mask. “Small children need the facial expressions of the adults to be able to make contact,” said Minister of Family Affairs Trautner. However, teachers were advised to wear a mask in situations of close contact, such as changing or feeding. In addition, the groups in the day care centers should be small and there should also be no exchange between the groups. The staff should not switch between groups either. In addition, the minister suggests staggering the delivery and collection times so that no large number of parents meet. And conversations with parents could take place by phone or using plexiglass panels.
How do educators rate these measures?
He was surprised that so far there is no fixed specification of how large a group can be, reports Holger Hrmann, head of administration at the Kindergarten Association Estenfeld (district Wrzburg). Otherwise, he is glad that you have so much freedom of choice and that not everything is dictated by the state down to the last detail. It is also very positive that children can play with each other within a group without keeping a minimum distance, says Hrmann. “You couldn’t make that clear to children. That would only mean stress for them and the employees.” Hrmann doesn’t think much of a mask requirement for educators: “This is rather confusing, especially for small children.” But if his colleagues want to wear a mask, they can.
