When Jürgen Tarrach sings Fado – miscellaneous things from Germany & the world

After the death of his wife and the subsequent professional crash, lawyer Silva (Jürgen Tarrach) had hardly any contact with his daughter. At most, images of memories of happy times remained. In the sixth Lisbon crime thriller, “Condemned to Silence” (director: Tim Trageser), Ines (Helen Woigk), who usually reports to him when she is short of money, appears because she is in an extremely precarious position: Ines has herself affiliated to a group of militant environmentalists who do not want to shy away from violence. Miguel (Martin Bruchmann), her friend and leader of the group, is suspected of murdering a drug smuggler. Because Silva believes that Miguel should be blamed for the murder for political reasons, he takes over the defense.

Not least because of Tarrach’s Fado singing performance in Silva’s regular Lisbon pub, this father-daughter story, shot in 2019, gets its peculiarly melancholy charm. As is well known, Fado fan Tarrach and partners released an album with their own Fado songs last year.

“It was nice to see that our compositions and texts, translated into Portuguese, could be experienced as real fados and that we can therefore claim to have hit the Portuguese soul,” explains Tarrach about the recordings in the film.
