WhatsApp Groups Gain New Control: Silence Mentions Now Possible
A highly requested feature is rolling out in a test version of WhatsApp, giving users more control over group notifications.
WhatsApp has evolved from a simple messaging app into a versatile platform for interaction, file sharing, and more, attracting millions of daily users. The app’s continued development focuses on adding features to enhance user experience and encourage interaction. The latest update addresses a common frustration: unwanted mention notifications in group chats.
Currently, WhatsApp allows users to tag specific contacts within a group using the “@” symbol followed by the user’s name. Even if a user has muted a group, they still receive a notification when directly mentioned. This can be disruptive, especially in active groups with frequent tagging.
The new feature, currently in testing, allows users to disable mention notifications entirely. This means that if someone tags you in a group, you will not receive a notification – you’ll only become aware of the mention when you actively open the group chat.
This change is designed to empower users to better manage thier notifications and minimize distractions. For those who prefer to silence group chats but still want to be alerted to direct messages, this feature offers a solution. Users who find constant mention notifications annoying, even when the group is muted, will now have the option to avoid them altogether.
Details on how to deactivate mention notifications are forthcoming as the feature remains in the testing phase. Further updates are expected shortly.
