What’s in the sock of a programmer

For two months, the Leninsky District Court of Yekaterinburg sent to the pre-trial detention center an IT specialist Alexander Litreev, the founder of Vee Security Russia and the developer of the human rights application Red Button (allows you to notify friends and human rights activists of your detention). He is charged with the purchase of two ecstasy tablets weighing 0.49 and 0.38 grams – this is part 1 of Art. 228 of the Criminal Code. A 23-year-old programmer could face up to three years in prison.

Litreev was detained in Yekaterinburg on the evening of February 22. According to investigators, he flew to the Urals from St. Petersburg to meet 19-year-old Alena K., a girl with whom she had been chatting on Instagram for more than six months.

Arriving in Yekaterinburg, Litreev, according to the police, took a car-sharing car, drove to K. in a student dormitory, and went with her to pick up the “bookmark” in the Krasnolesye area (south-western outskirts of the city). Having found drugs, the programmer went to the Novotel hotel, next to which he was stopped by traffic police.

“The police report said that they“ received information ”that Litreev allegedly could carry drugs,” programmer’s lawyer Alexey Bushmakov told Novaya Gazeta. – Where this information comes from is not clear.

The lawyer notes that during the detention, force was used against Alexander Litreev, his jacket was torn. At the same time, the police did not find drugs – ecstasy was found only in the police department No. 5, in the sock of a programmer.

Police officers already knew about the public activity of Alexander. They treated him badly: for example, in the ITT, he said there were five free cells, but he was taken to an already occupied one and he was sleeping on the floor, ”says the lawyer.

Non-native scourge

The court, as a measure of restraint, was appointed for Litreev on the day off. And therefore, even in the notification for the lawyer, the Interior Ministry officers wrote: the meeting will begin at about 11:00.

By 11:00 it did not start. Half an hour before that, judge Anton Belykh arrived. Belatedly, the rest of the process participants pulled themselves up. Alexander Litreev himself was brought into the hall as a particularly dangerous criminal: the police asked everyone to leave the floor.

The first question of journalists to Litreev – even before the meeting: “Do you admit guilt?” The programmer nods: “I admit.”

The meeting begins. The judge reads the case file. It turns out that Litreev’s companion confirms his guilt. Here are her testimonies:

“Litreev said that he bought the drug MDMA on the Hydra website through a bookmark that he planned to pick up upon arrival. On February 22, Alexander flew to Yekaterinburg, drove into my dormitory, and then drove to Krasnolesye, where Alexander took a bag of narcotic substance in the park, which was magnetically attached to one of the garbage cans. Alexander put the bag in his shoes. ”

The investigation petitioned: put the programmer in custody for two months. Yes, the crime is not a serious one, but there is nowhere for Litreev to live in Yekaterinburg, nothing connects him to the city. He does not have a residence permit in Russia either. But there is a residence permit in Estonia (the programmer won a competition for business development in this country). Therefore – it can hide.

The defense fights off beautifully: he brings to court a man who is ready to hand over his apartment in Yekaterinburg to Alexander. Officially, by agreement. An attorney is applying for house arrest in this apartment.

– The story of my life shows that I am not a person who can be any danger. I have two degrees. I am a frequently quoted public figure, cybersecurity expert, member of the Internet Development Society’s panel of experts. It would be unreasonable for me to spoil my reputation by trying to hide from justice, ”Litreev himself said.

The prosecution, as usual, found killer counterarguments.

– I think that the investigating authority has exceptional circumstances for choosing a preventive measure in the form of detention. Litreev, being at large, can hide from the bodies of inquiry and the court, as he has a passport and a residence permit in Estonia until 2024, the prosecutor said.

Alexander Litreev tried to object from the cage that he did not have a passport in his hands right now, since he had been seized by the police. But this fact was not of interest to either the prosecution or the judge.

As a result, in spite of a not difficult article and Litreev’s readiness to connect himself with Yekaterinburg as a rented apartment, the court sent him to a pre-trial detention center.

– The court showed that it is better to break the law in the region of its registration. Because if you live in Visimo-Utkinsk and work at a local factory, you have strong enough ties with this place. And if you are a freelancer, registered in the Leningrad Region, but did something in Yekaterinburg, you will certainly hide, ”Litreeev’s lawyer Alexei Bushmakov said after the meeting.

The defense will appeal against the decision to arrest the programmer.

Questions

Despite the fact that Alexander Litreev pleaded guilty, questions remain in the matter.

First, how exactly did the police find out that the programmer bought ecstasy? After the arrest of Alexander, many suspected his companion Alena K. of provocation. However, for the girl herself, what happened seemed to turn out to be very stressful. She writes confused posts on Twitter, in which she claims that she is disgusted to read that she framed Alexander: “We were detained together, sent together for analysis. I was just lucky, and they regretted me and let me go, because they didn’t find anything from me. ” In an interview with the public “Typical Yekaterinburg” girl toldthat she receives threats, and she is afraid to go out.

But if the police didn’t learn about buying ecstasy from a girl, then it turns out that they followed Alexander? Then on what basis?

The second question: what measures have been taken to reach the seller?
