The Ministry of Education and Science (MES) currently plans to resume full-time studies in September, however, if the epidemiological situation changes, the Ministry also envisages Option B – to continue the study process remotely, Minister of Education and Science Ilga Šuplinska (JKP) .

MES is planning a lot of changes related to the conclusions after the current study process.

The Minister said that a survey of students, parents and teachers conducted by the Ministry of Education and Science and Edurio shows that 80 to 85% rated this process as good and very good.

She found that the main problems were related to three aspects. From the teachers ‘point of view, a large part of the teachers’ work was to create feedback, because mainly teachers used e-mails for communication. From the parents’ point of view, it was difficult and time-consuming to explain the tasks to the children, while the third aspect was that only 20-25% of schools used online lessons.

In the program, Aija Melle, the principal of Jugla Secondary School, emphasized that the curriculum could not be assessed as good and very good, because there was a lot of unteached curriculum left, considering that teachers did not focus on the new curriculum, but on explaining the existing material.

Accordingly, in the next school year, teachers will have to return to the previous year’s subject, the principal said.

Šuplinska emphasized that schools that chose a common online platform coped very well with the learning process. At the same time, she stated that the Ministry of Education and Science is currently explaining what the distance learning process means, developing a virtual classroom tool and thinking about continuing the educational channel “Your classroom”. According to Šuplinskas, a procurement for the virtual classroom tool will be announced soon. Prototypes of the tool are currently being identified.

Melle emphasized in the program that the Ministry of Education and Science should think about how to organize the learning process, because so far it has been proven that teachers burn out a lot, as they work much more than in the face-to-face process. The secondary school principal also emphasized that if learning had to be organized in person, partially remotely or in person within a distance of two meters, it would be a great challenge, and the school was not ready for that, given that Jugla Secondary School has 1,800 students, mostly 32 students. .

“Right now, all the teachers are on vacation, we will observe the situation with Covid-19 in August, and then a decision will be made, but it will be much too late,” said Melle.

The Minister explained that the MES is preparing guidelines for the next school year, and she hopes that on July 28, the government will review them and the ministry will send them to schools.

At the same time, she emphasized that the guidelines would be nothing new in terms of the organizational process, as each school would have to assess its own capacity and whether it was necessary to introduce shifts, provide senior classes one day a week remotely or some other solution.

According to her, the biggest headache for school principals will be when deciding on common areas, because there will be no “one common recipe”.

The implementation of the learning process will depend on the size of the school, the modernity of the building and whether the school has its own territory. “It is not possible to develop common guidelines for all educational institutions,” the politician emphasized.
