(CNN Spanish) – There are at least five confirmed cases of Wuhan coronavirus in the US. UU., A number that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will continue to increase. In Latin America there is a possible case in Colombia and another in Ecuador. Other possible cases in Mexico and Brazil were ruled out.
This is what we know:
Despite its impact on China – where at least 80 people have died – the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains that the risk to Americans is low. But there is still much about the virus, its symptoms and the ease with which it is spread that health officials do not know.
“We need to prepare as if it were a pandemic, but I still hope it is not,” said Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC.
The five confirmed patients had recently returned from Wuhan, the CDC said.
The patients are in:
Washington State: It was the first case of coronavirus in the USA. He is a man in his 30s, who sought urgent medical help after returning from Wuhan. He is receiving treatment and is in an isolated area designed for patients with highly contagious diseases and a robot monitors his vital signs. It is in stable condition.
One in Chicago: A woman in her 60s who also returned from Wuhan and was diagnosed within a few days. He is in the hospital, stable and receiving treatment.
Orange County, California: A man in his 50s who arrived from Wuhan this month. It is in a local hospital.
Arizona: an adult whose gender and age are unknown. He is not hospitalized but is isolated at home, the state Department of Health said.
What is being done?
The CDC is evaluating Wuhan travelers at several US airports. UU., Including Los Angeles, San Francisco and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport began monitoring last week.
The CDC advises Americans to avoid unnecessary trips to Hubei province. Three dozen American diplomats and their families in Wuhan will evacuate the region to return to the United States earlier this week.
In addition, the CDC encourages people to follow the flu season protocol: wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid sick people and stay at home and avoid public situations if they are sick. A coronavirus vaccine would take at least a year to reach the public.
There are two cases. It is a couple of husbands who are sick and isolated in their home. It is known to the woman that she is not experiencing severe symptoms. The two were traveling in the Wuhan area. The two patients are in Ontario, and authorities say the risk in the province remains low.
The director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) urged last week to the countries of the region to “be prepared to detect, isolate and care for patients infected with the new coronavirus early, given the possibility of receiving travelers from countries where there is virus transmission ”.
At the moment there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Latin America, but there have been several possible cases that have been ruled out, and others that remain under observation.

Since January 15, according to the Ministry of Health of Colombia, the protocols “response to the handling of such cases have been updated. Within the routine surveillance and care processes, protocols for the detection and treatment of patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (IRAG) are being applied, and travelers are being followed, ”they explain.
Several possible cases have been reported in the country, but so far none confirmed. According to laboratory diagnostic procedures, the Institute of Diagnostic and Epidemiological Reference (InDRE) reported that of the 7 previously identified suspicious cases, none were positive for coronavirus.

In addition, tests are being carried out on travelers with symptoms and surveillance is maintained on flights from China at the international airports of Tijuana, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Cancun and Mexico City.
