What should you pay attention to when buying a console on Black Friday? | Guide

It’s time for Black Friday again! That means that there are several deals in the pipeline – not just for games, but also for consoles. The new game consoles from Sony and Microsoft have just been released and are still difficult to find – let alone buy them at a discount – but there is plenty of choice for the average gamer. The different consoles are described below and for whom they are intended. There is undoubtedly something for you!

Nintendo Switch en Switch Lite

The hybrid Switch is one of the most popular game consoles at the moment. And with good reason, because Nintendo has released one top game after another for the console. On platforming adventure in Super Mario Odyssey, building your own village on a tropical island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, exploring a massive game world in Zelda: Breath of the Wild or hunting ghosts in Luigi’s Mansion 3, the Switch is home to all markets. The unique aspect of the console is, of course, that you can connect it to television with the included dock, as well as hold it in your hands and play on the screen of the device itself. A game console and handheld in one!

This only applies to the Nintendo Switch itself. There is also a Lite version – which comes in a variety of colors – which not can be connected to a television. It is therefore not supplied with a dock and it cannot be attached to the television with a cable. The Switch Lite is therefore only intended as a handheld. However, you can get extra Joy-Cons for both versions: you can use these controllers in both hands or one per hand. Also an option is the Pro Controller, which is more like traditional controllers from other game consoles.

Sony has released some incredibly strong first-party games to PlayStation 4, from the epic God of War to the adventurous Ghost of Tsushima, and from the emotional highs in The Last of Us: Part 2 to the post-apocalyptic environments of Horizon. Zero Dawn. And since it was the most popular console of the last generation, all major third-party games can be found on it. With a PlayStation 4 you can therefore continue for years to come! In fact, some PS5 toppers such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon Forbidden West also appear on the console.

You can go for the PlayStation 4 Slim. This cheap option takes up little space and can display HDR for beautiful color reproduction on your television. There are two versions: a model with 500 GB of storage and a model with 1 TB of storage. If you have a 4K television at home, the PlayStation 4 Pro is the better choice. PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 is one of two new consoles released this fall. Because he’s only just out and early adopters Ordering the device en masse, it is difficult to obtain and there are no discounts, but you might come across one anyway. That would certainly not be a punishment, because the PlayStation 5 is a real powerhouse. Games run in 4k and hdr and contain ray tracing, which means that light reflects off virtual surfaces in a realistic way. The console even supports 8k, if you have a television that supports it. Thanks to the 3D audio, sound realistically comes from the right direction. Most important, however, is the SSD drive in the console, which allows very short loading times and even larger gaming environments.

But the PlayStation 5 innovates in more areas. The DualSense controller, for example, includes haptic feedback, which makes vibrations reflect exactly what is happening in the game. You really notice the difference between walking or driving on a paved road or through the mud. Not only will you be able to play online, you’ll also receive 20 of the best PlayStation 4 games ever, from God of War and The Last of Us: Remastered to Resident Evil 7 and Bloodborne.

Not that you need those PS4 games, because the PlayStation 5 already has an impressive line-up of games. Spider-Man: Miles Morales lets you fly through the streets of New York on your web, push you to the limit in the highly anticipated remake of Demon’s Souls and every PlayStation 5 comes with the joyful platformer Astro’s Playroom, bringing the innovative features of the DualSense controller can be properly demonstrated. It doesn’t really matter whether you get the regular PlayStation 5 or the Digital Edition: both consoles are exactly the same, only in the regular editions can discs and the Digital Edition can only download games. Of course there is also a price difference to make it extra tempting.

Xbox Series X en Xbox Series S

Microsoft has also released new game consoles this fall, in the form of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. These new consoles differ from each other in specific areas. There is no disk drive in the Series S, but there is in the Series X. The latter is also a lot more powerful, with the possibility to display 4k and 8k in hdr, while the Series S ‘only’ keeps it at 1440p. However, both consoles can play the same games. A number of toppers are already available at launch, from the adventurous Viking game Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and the tactical Gears Tactics, to Dirt 5 for racing enthusiasts and The Falconeer, developed in the Netherlands.

Both consoles also give you access to Xbox Game Pass when you purchase a subscription. This Netflix-like service contains more than a hundred games that you can play as long as you keep your subscription. Microsoft regularly refreshes this offer and in any case all games of the company itself (and therefore the various studios of Microsoft) appear on the service on the day of release. Xbox Series X and S also excel in backward compatibility: all games that were playable on Xbox One are also on the new consoles.

As with the PlayStation 5, the Series X and S are just new and are therefore still difficult to obtain this fall. You don’t have to count on discounts anyway. But persistence wins, and with a bit of luck you might still find a copy!
