what robotic dogs are used for at the factory

Ford is experimenting with two robot dogs, Fluffy and Spot, in the Van Dyke Transmission Plant. The function and characteristics

Ford, Fluffy and Spot arrive: the robot dogs in the factories

They are called Fluffy e Spot. But they are not two mascots. They are two robots, two robot dogs. Ford has decided to test them as plant guardians at the Van Dyke Transmission Plant. They will help engineers scan and redesign spaces.

Developed by Boston Dynamics, these robots also resemble puppies in movements. And they can perform several functions. Designed to save time and gain efficiency, they weigh about thirty kilos and move at almost 5 km / h. All their movements are recorded through five cameras. With an autonomy of two hours, Fluffy and Spot will help update the home design software and to facilitate the reorganization of internal spaces.

If the experimentation goes well, Ford will be able to complete much faster an operation that would otherwise have required two weeks of work with a laser system on a tripod, and at half the operating costs.

Ford, the robot dogs: the video in the factory

Robot dogs have three speeds, or rather three gaits: walking distance, inclined floors, steps. They can cross any space every context of the factory, and they get up on their own if they fall down meeting an obstacle.

Engineer Paula Wielbelhaus controls them remotely. In fact, he can see what they observe through the cameras and eventually block them. In the future, Ford would like to come up with a possibility of remote programming, from anywhere in the world. For now, however, to be operated you must be no more than 50 meters away.
