It was erected because the sacristy roof and the wall to the courtyard need to be renovated. Photo: Marion Eckert Now that the gastronomy at the Kreuzberg Monastery is on again, many visitors to the Holy Mountain of Franconia notice that the monastery is under construction. The large yellow stuff on the church of the monastery can be seen from afar. Many are therefore wondering what work is being done here. However, the extent of the work is not yet quite clear, because investigations are currently underway to determine the condition of the building. The crane was erected because the roof of the sacristy is being renewed. The outside walls of the courtyard are also to be renovated. However, the Guardian of the monastery Father Georg Andlinger could not yet quantify the exact extent and the costs. “It is still being investigated how far the damage has progressed,” he summarized. Wait for the result of the examination With the sacristy roof, it is clear that a new roof covering is required and, in some cases, a new beam. However, the final results of the examinations that have been carried out here must also be awaited. Part of the roof of the farm building will probably also be replaced. Father Georg Andlinger could not say on the stand when this area was last renewed. “It has been repaired every now and then.” The large cladding in the courtyard of the monastery protects the guests. Photo: Marion Eckert – The outer wall, which is partly covered with sheet metal, is also examined. In order to be able to do this safely for the visitors to the monastery complex, a large-scale formwork was installed in the interior so that material cannot fall into the courtyard from either the roof or the wall. “The sheet metal cladding has to be removed. It is examined whether a renewal is necessary,” said Father Andlinger. Costs still unclear The German Franciscan Province is the owner of the monastery. But if parts of the business operations are also renovated, the costs will be shared proportionately between the monastery and the Klosterbetriebe GmbH, explained Andlinger. He was not yet able to make a statement about the exact amount of the costs and the respective shares. Also, it is not clear at what level the grants may flow. “We have submitted an application to the diocese, but that is still open.” It is also unclear whether a possible subsidy due to the provisional budget lock for the Dizese Wrzburg due to the corona situation is in doubt. “It is a complex procedure, we have to wait for the results of the preliminary examinations.” The wall to the inner courtyard on Kreuzberg is currently being examined for damage.
