“A wave like the one we’re experiencing now is not abnormal at all,” says Boon. “Before corona, we always had a strong peak at this time of year. The virus then circulates very violently for a few weeks, and then disappears again as it came.”
“What makes this year special, in my opinion, is that there are now several viruses circulating at the same time. This, of course, all has to do with the fact that many children have been exposed to little or no exposure to the classics during the last two years during the winter corona crisis. As a result, the most susceptible group of children this year is larger than in other years. For example, we see that children with underlying problems, such as lung or muscle ailments, seems to be slightly more susceptible than before.”
“So it’s really busy in the hospitals, which isn’t conducive to the caseload, but it’s not certain that all the kids here are with RSV.”
