Attention is being drawn to Armin Rachett, Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, the next president of the CDU, who will succeed German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

According to Reuters news agency on the 17th (local time), Rachet, a former journalist and lawyer, is considered a pragmatist with a moderate tendency.

He is also a close friend of Merkel and a loyal friend. He supported Prime Minister Merkel’s policy as Vice President of the Party for nine years from 2012.

He shared opinions with Prime Minister Merkel on a number of issues, particularly in public support for the government’s acceptance of refugees during the 2015 European refugee crisis.

According to Germany’s Deutsche Vele, he has never had a public confrontation with Merkel.

Rachet studied law and political science at the University of Munich, and began his career as a journalist. At the age of 33, he was elected to the German Federal House of Representatives in 1994 and entered politics.

Diplomatically, it has strongly supported EU integration. He has been a member of the European Parliament for six years since 1999, and since 2005 he has gained administrative experience leading Germany’s most populous North Rhine-Westphalia.

He was elected on the 16th with a majority of 521 votes in the second round of the party’s representatives, with 1001 members of the Democratic Party participating.

Currently, the CDP has a 35-37% approval rating in public opinion polls. If alliance with the Christian Socialist Party (CSU) is maintained, Rachet will become the next prime minister.

However, some point out that public support is falling compared to other prime minister candidates, such as Health Minister Jens Spane, who gained popularity in response to Corona 19, and President of the Knights Party Markus Sinder.
