It’s easy to get lost in the jungle of abbreviations and acronyms used online. We explain what “RS” and “MS” mean in Snapchat.

In the Snapchat app, you can send short videos and pictures – so-called snaps. In this context, the letters “RS” or “MS” occasionally appear. These acronyms stand for “Rund Snap” or “Bulk Snap”. It is an indication for the recipient that the message was not specifically addressed to him, but that other contacts have also received this message – a kind of circular mail.

Round snaps are often used to maintain a user’s so-called “streak” with other users. In Snapchat, emoticons are used to evaluate interactions between users, i.e. how often users have regular contact with each other. This is a kind of friendship barometer, especially among younger users. In a “Snapstreak”, a flame symbol shows that two users have had regular contact for three days in a row. With daily contact over a longer period of time, further flame symbols are added. In order not to break off these series, which often consist of several people, “RS” or “MS” are often used.
