“We are already in a fourth wave, we have already passed 5% (positive cases) of what is acceptable to call a fourth wave. As we know, it is present in many provinces and departments of our country, and at the head is the capital (Lima)”announced the Minister of Health, Jorge López.

Along these lines, he asked the population to go to the vaccination centers because it is the only way to prevent people from ending up in a hospital bed or even in an ICU bed. He insisted on the use of a mask in crowded places.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE IN A FOURTH WAVE?

For us to be in a fourth wave means an increase in cases of COVID-19 in Peru. The Ministry of Health indicated that several weeks ago Peru reported an average of 1,800 positive cases of COVID-19 per week, but now the figure has increased to 11,000 cases per week, focused on Metropolitan Lima.

The Minsa urged public and private health facilities in the country to remain alert to detect new cases of infection in time, as well as strengthen the national epidemiological surveillance system that will allow timely investigation of cases.

WHICH VARIANT IS DOMINATING THE FOURTH WAVE?

The Ministry of Health (Minsa) warned that this fourth wave has been reporting cases of the omicron variant and its new lineages BA.4 and BA.5, which would be changing the epidemiological scenario of infection in the country.

Since Epidemiological Week (EW) 14-2022, an increase in COVID-19 cases has been observed in districts of Metropolitan Lima and there is an increase in the percentage of isolation of the BA.4 and BA.5 lineages, especially the latter, which coincides with a higher number of infections.

WHERE IS THE INCREASE IN CASES RECORDED?

At the national level, a sustained increase in confirmed cases of COVID-19 is observed, from 1,813 to 11,177 in nine weeks.

The increase in cases is registered in the regions of Áncash, Arequipa, Callao, Cusco, Junín, La Libertad, Ica, Lambayeque, Lima, Moquegua, Cajamarca, Pasco, Piura and Tacna. Lima and Arequipa report a higher incidence with 4,882 and 750 infections, respectively.
