Westerwald’s partner church GKPS chooses new Ephorus: Dr. Dedy Fazar Purba

The Indonesian partner church of Ev. In its 44th synod from November 18 to 22, the Dean of Westerwald appointed Pastor Dr. Dedy Fazar Purba (lecturer at Abdi Sabda College Medan) elected as the new Ephorus (Bishop) of the GKPS (Prot. Simalungun-Batak Church, North Sumatra). Ephorus Purba received 260 of the 437 votes. Three pastors ran for the office of Ephorus in the second round of voting. The previous Ephorus Pastor Rumanja M. Purba is retiring.

Westerburg. Pastor Dr. Paul Ulrich Munthe (Pematangsiantar) was re-elected as Secretary General. He is well known to the dean’s office through his collaboration over the past five years and has visited the dean’s office several times. Because of the corona crisis, the GKPS Synod, which has 453 members, was carried out digitally. In addition to the elections of the Ephorus and the General Secretary, the elections of regional church governing bodies also took place. The synod also decided on the content of the programs for the next five years.

Retired Dean Martin Fries (voluntary profile holder for mission and kumene) congratulated the newly elected in a greeting and thanked the previous bishop for the services in the GKPS and for the cooperation within the framework of the partnership.

The Prot. Simalungun Batak Church currently has 227,700 members. The central area of ​​the GKPS is in North Sumatra north-east of Lake Toba. Other parishes and districts of the GKPS are in Sdsumatra, Java, Nias and West Papua. Like the EKHN, the GKPS is a member of the United Ev. Mission / United in Mission, an international mission community that has 39 members (38 regional churches in Germany, Africa and Asia and the von Bodelschwigh Foundation Bethel near Bielefeld). The churches work together in the following areas, among others: preaching and evangelism, diakonia, youth work, education, justice, peace and integrity of creation, human rights, theological and diaconal training, staff exchange.
