Western Digital launches portable 2TB SSD

Western Digital releases a new My Passport SSD. With a capacity of 2 TB and a USB 3.2 interface, the thing should facilitate fast data transfer on the go.

WD introduces a portable SSD with a capacity of up to 2 TB to the My Passport range. The drive is equipped with USB 3.2 and supports read and write speeds of 1,050 MBps and 1,000 MBps respectively. Western Digital provides 256 bots with AES encryption and makes the gem drop resistant to two meters (1.98 meters to be exact). The high speed combined with the high capacity make the small external SSD suitable for creative professionals who want to backup data such as video files on the go. After all, that’s always a good idea, as only became apparent after an error in an update to Adobe Lightroom for iOS.

Versions and availability

WD will initially release the drive in a light version with 500 GB or 1 TB capacity. The 2 TB version will follow later this year. The available devices cost 152.99 euros and 249.99 euros, depending on the size of the internal SSD. In time, four colors will become available, but for the time being you can only get the disc in gray. Included in the box is a USB C cap along with a USB A adapter, although connection speed through the protocols associated with USB A is typically slower.

Western Digital bought flash specialist Sandisk in 2015 and has since then integrated that manufacturer’s flash portfolio into its own offering. The My Passport drive is just one example of this. The entire portfolio of the storage giant now includes SSDs.

WD was recently discredited with its hard drives. The manufacturer was been unfair about the technology used in NAS drives, resulting in dissatisfied customers.
