WEST-FRANCE INFO. Samuel Paty: a small ad to replace the murdered professor

The Academy of Versailles published this Sunday morning a classified ad on the Pôle Emploi website in order to recruit a professor to teach history and geography at the college of Bois d’Aulne, in Conflans Sainte-Honorine. A ten-month fixed-term contract for eighteen hours of weekly lessons, monthly salary of € 1,900 to € 2,300 over twelve months. Beginner accepted.

Commonplace? Not really. It was in this college in Yvelines and in this position that Samuel Paty, assassinated on October 16 through Abdullakh Anzorov, a Russian refugee of Chechen origin, aged 18, shot dead a few minutes after his crime by the police in Éragny (Val-d’Oise).

He could not bear the fact that the professor of history and geography showed cartoons of Muhammad, published by Charlie Hebdo, during a course on freedom of expression on October 6. A violent campaign on social networks, calling Samuel Paty thug and of sick had urged him to take action.

General Secretary of Snes-FSU, the main secondary teaching union, Frederique Rolet is very surprised by the publication of this classified ad. Normally, when a teacher is absent due to illness or accident, an incumbent is called in on the replacement zone. It seems odd that the academy hasn’t found one: it’s only December!

A process that is not unusual

Should we deduce from this that the position attracts little to the incumbents, given the symbolic office of the position? Perhaps. The recruitment of professors by classified ad is not unusual, however. What is more important is the way the ad is worded.

Normally, the recruiting academy posts a more vague advertisement, such as: we are recruiting a professorship in such and such a discipline in the academy. We never specify for which specific position, in which establishment, explains Frédérique Rolet.

It’s more than shocking, it’s unacceptable, reacts for his part Antoine Tardi, secretary general of Snes for the academy of Versailles. From the start, special attention has been requested to be paid to this establishment. That the replacements, whatever the subject, be trained and voluntary incumbents, and not contract workers. This college needs serenity. This is not the type of classified ad that will bring it.

The union must enter the rectorate of Versailles during the day to remove the recruitment advertisement.
