Werder Bremen save a point in the final against VfB Stuttgart

Status: 08.15.2022 00:01

VfB Stuttgart already looked like the sure winner in the Bundesliga against Werder Bremen. But Werder scored to equalize in injury time.

Werder’s Oliver Burke scored in the last minute of injury time for a 2-2 (1-1) draw and scored Bremen’s second point of the season on Matchday 2. Niclas Füllkrug initially gave Bremen the lead in the fourth minute. Wataru Endo (28th minute) and Silas Katompa Mvumpa (76th) temporarily reversed the game in favor of VfB, who missed their first win of the season.

Füllkrug with the quick advantage for Bremen

Bremen moved with determination and it was only three minutes before the Werder fans could celebrate the Bundesliga’s return home. Bremen caught the ball in midfield. Anthony Jung crossed from the left into the penalty area, where Füllkrug got the better of Waldemar Anton and headed for the top left corner of the goal (4 ‘).

Four minutes later, Füllkrug almost followed suit, but slammed the ball into the crossbar from 16 meters (8 ‘).

Endo initially fails because of Pavlenka

After about 15 minutes, Werder, who had been furious until then, take their foot off the gas and leave the ball to Stuttgart, but the VfB does not know what to do with it and consequently does not obtain agreements. At 32 ‘Endo tries from distance. The powerful shot created problems for Werder goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka, but in the end he came too central.

Endo’s second attempt was therefore significantly better. At 38 ‘the Japanese took the ball 20 meters from the goal and this time they gave Pavlenka no escape. The powerful shot hit the left door. The 1: 1 was also the interval score.

Tomás forgives from an acute point of view

After the team change, both teams were initially concerned about safety. However, the SVW went on the break after 55 minutes. Stuttgart’s Tiago Tomás scored a clear shot from five yards, but the corner was too sharp for Pavlenka to save it.

Overall, the second round was enjoyable in warm temperatures. Little has happened in the penalty area. After 69 minutes, Marvin Ducksch tries a shot from outside the box but misses the goal. It was Bremen’s first goal of the second half.

Kalajdzic hangs up for Silas

The match was in danger of splashing towards the final whistle, but then Sasa Kalajdzic of Stuttgart had an idea. His deep pass reached fast Silas, who overtook Pavlenka to take Stuttgart ahead (76 ‘). Three minutes later Silas still runs free towards Pavlenka, but this time Werder wins which prevents the early decision (79 ‘).

And so the door remained open for Werder. And in the last minute of five minutes of injury time, Bremen passed. Mitchell Weiser extended a ball in the penalty area to Burke, who suddenly found himself alone in front of Florian Müller and flipped the ball over the VfB goalkeeper (90 ‘+5’).

Bremen fans criticize Mislintat for statements about Karazor

In the final stages the VfB replaced Atakan Karazor, just like in the first day. Karazor was arrested while on vacation in Ibiza in mid-June. The Spanish judiciary initially accused the 25-year-old of raping a young Spanish man, six weeks later the accusation was of sexual assault. On 21 July, the VfB professional was released on bail. Karazor, who denies the allegations, is therefore still threatened with legal consequences.

VfB sporting director Sven Mislintat had repeatedly stressed that the defensive man was “Clearly our player is a full member of the team”. Referring to this, fans in the East bend in Bremen displayed a banner with the words: “No protection for the guilty. Solidarity with those affected. Mislintat, shut up.”

“I have to live with it. I have a completely different conception of democracy and the judiciary, which is that there should be no prejudices. The principle of the presumption of innocence should apply clearly.”Mislintat said.

Werder now against Borussia Dortmund

Werder are now away to Borussia Dortmund for the third match of next Saturday (08/20/2022, 15:30). At the same time, VfB Stuttgart welcomes SC Freiburg.
